MD Writer is a native Mac editor for people who want Markdown to remain a file format. It opens .md and plain-text documents directly on disk, with native document opening, autosave, and recent files.
The app concentrates on four jobs:
- Keep documents and structure close with one left sidebar for documents, an outline, formatting controls, and statistics.
- See Markdown structure for headings, quotes, links, code, lists, and YAML front matter, with raw source available when precision matters.
- Apply common formatting from collapsible controls, with a Markdown guide for syntax, shortcuts, and copyable YAML metadata.
- Return to work quickly through recent files, adjustable type, and Light, Dark, or Forest themes.
Word count, reading time, compact line spacing, and an AppKit-backed text editor keep the writing experience focused. Source and formatted views make it easy to check the underlying Markdown.
Version 1.0 is packaged as a signed, notarised universal Mac app for Intel and Apple silicon, requiring macOS Sonoma 14 or later. The repository includes a dedicated landing page and the release archive. The document itself remains an ordinary file that can be opened elsewhere.
